Who is Carl Kraft?

Carl was born in 1917 in Portsmouth, VA. He worked as a railway clerk prior to serving as an Instructor of Air Recognition at Santa Ana Army Air Base during World War II. Later he worked as a clerk for the Coast Guard, as well as writing human interest stories for Virginia newspapers. His widely varied interests include shell collecting, railroads, jazz, fishing, and history. He shed his Methodist upbringing to become an atheist at an early age, and he's long been interested in social justice and equality. He loves telling tales about his own personal history to me, his daughter, and I finally decided to preserve some of his history by writing it down. This is oral history told by a very old man, and as such some of his memories may be distorted or outright wrong. I attempt to provide links supporting or disproving his words where possible.
